How to change maxPlayers on a DayZ server

You want more (or fewer) people on the server. The cap is the maxPlayers field. It does not create RAM: if the machine is small, 60 slots only fill up and the server chokes on loot and vehicles.

By the end of this guide the limit on the list and on Direct Connect matches the number you saved.

Where the limit lives

C:\DayZServer\serverDZ.cfg, maxPlayers line. Integer and semicolon. It is not a Minecraft panel slot.

Step by step

  1. Stop DayZServer_x64.exe.
  2. Open C:\DayZServer\serverDZ.cfg.
  3. Adjust maxPlayers (example: 20, 30 or 40).
  4. Save and start the server.
serverDZ.cfg
maxPlayers = 40;

How to verify

  1. On the client list, the server shows the cap (e.g. 0/40).
  2. If someone tries to join when the server is full, the client refuses.

If it failed

  • Number did not change → did not restart the process or edited another cfg.
  • Server slow with few people → the problem may be mods/RAM, not a low maxPlayers.
  • Broken cfg → missing ; on the line.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers before you order

maxPlayers = 40; in serverDZ.cfg. Restart DayZServer_x64.exe.

The cfg accepts the number. RAM and disk may not. Small group: 20 to 30. With mods, raise the number only if the machine can take it.
